Beginners Guide - What To Expect From Your First E-Stim Session.

Image showing a woman reading an e-stim manual with a confused look on her face.

Joanne Summers |

You've heard about e-stim online and are contemplating giving it a go. But you're probably nervous about what to expect during your first e-stim session, with a thousand questions on your mind.

Is it going to hurt?
Is it safe?
Am I going to set the bed sheets on fire?

The quick answer to those questions, though, is no, yes and good lord no, but we'll cover everything here so you feel more confident.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through:

  • What kit you actually need for your first e-stim session.
  • How to wire yourself up in a simple, safe way.
  • What sensations you’re likely to feel (and what you won’t).
  • How to build confidence for future, more adventurous sessions.

By the end, you should feel a lot less nervous and a lot more ready to let those electrons flow.

Safety Considerations

E-stim is designed to be enjoyable and safe when used correctly, but it still involves electricity, so a bit of respect and common sense go a long way.

For your very first session, we’re going to keep things simple and conservative so you can focus on getting used to the sensations rather than worrying about your delicate bits.

Essential Safety Guidelines

  • Stay below the waist for play sessions. Once you’ve got this first “practice” session out of the way, genitals and other fun zones are fair game – but current should never pass through the chest.
  • Keep both electrodes on the same limb. If you’re wiring up your forearm, put both pad electrodes on the same arm so the current doesn’t cross your chest.
  • Avoid thick, coarse hair. Hairy areas can increase the risk of hot spots. Aim for smoother skin or areas with fine hair, or trim beforehand.
  • Watch for hot spots. If you feel prickly, sharp, or “burny” sensations, turn the power down, stop, and move the electrodes.
  • Never move electrodes with the power on. Always turn the intensity back to zero and switch off your control box before repositioning or removing electrodes.

Who Should Avoid E-Stim?

E-stim should be avoided if you:

  • Have electronic medical implants (such as a pacemaker).
  • Are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
  • Have serious heart conditions or other medical issues where electrical stimulation may be a concern.

If you’re ever unsure, speak to a medical professional first. This advice is for those 18+ and assumes you have no medical conditions.

Basic Kit Requirements

Before enjoying your first e-stim session, you will need three bits of kit to create a circuit:

1 - A Control box, this is the electronic gizmo that creates the amazing electrical impulses that we enjoy during an e-stim session.

2 - A set of electrodes. To create a simple e-stim circuit, you need two electrodes, which serve as contact points. One to let the e-stim current into your body and one to complete the circuit back to the control box.

3 - A set of cables to link the control box to the electrodes. These are included with a control box when you buy it and are suitable for the pad electrodes in the kit.

Luckily, kits are available that include all three required pieces of equipment for every budget.

The good news? You don’t have to piece this together yourself. There are beginner-friendly kits that include everything you need in one box and work straight out of the pack.

How To Wire Up For Your First Session

Step by step guide to your first e-stim sessions

Here’s the golden rule for your first time: keep it simple.

Forget tri-phase, audio input, or multiple channels. We’re going to use:

  • Just one channel on your control box
  • Two self-adhesive pad electrodes
  • A non-erogenous area – your forearm or shin

If your control box came with a pair of pad electrodes, they are perfect for this first test run. The goal is not instant orgasmic fireworks – it’s to show your brain that e-stim can be gentle, controllable, and even quite relaxing.

Step-By-Step Setup

  1. Plug your cable into a single channel on your control box.
  2. Attach each end of the cable to one pad electrode.
  3. Place the two pads on one forearm, about 5 cm (2 inches) apart. Alternatively, pop them on your shin, again on the same leg.
  4. Make sure the pads are fully stuck down on clean, dry skin.
  5. Double-check that the intensity/power dial is set to zero before switching the control box on.

Placing the pads in a non-erogenous zone like your forearm or shin lets you learn how the controls behave without worrying about zapping your more sensitive areas. This first session is all about exploration, not performance.

Turning Things On (Gently!)

  1. Switch your control box on with the intensity still at zero.
  2. Select a basic pattern or mode – something continuous and steady is ideal to begin with.
  3. Slowly start to increase the intensity until you feel the first little flutter or tingle.
  4. Pause there and let your brain catch up. Notice how it feels.
  5. Gently nudge the power up and down, and try one or two different patterns to see how they change the sensation.

Important: Anytime you want to move or remove the pads, turn the intensity back to zero and switch the box off first. Failing to do this is how people accidentally give themselves a surprise zap.

What Will You Actually Feel in Your First E-Stim Session?

Your first e-stim session is your chance to get familiar with your control box and what it can do. Start low and slow and treat it like a guided tour of the sensations rather than a race to the finish line.

Depending on the power level and pattern, you may feel:

  • A soft tingling or buzzing, like tiny bubbles fizzing under your skin.
  • Light pulsing or throbbing sensations.
  • A stroking or rhythmic “tapping” feeling as the pattern changes.
  • Small twitches in the muscles under the pads.

You may even see your fingers move or your muscles twitch in time with the pulses. That’s normal at these low settings, and one of the reasons we don’t recommend starting out on large muscle areas like your thighs.

As you explore, pay attention to:

  • How does each increase in power change the feeling?
  • How different programmes or patterns feel – sharper, smoother, more pulsing, more stroking.
  • What feels comfortable, and what feels too intense.

This first session is not about finding the “ultimate” setting. It’s about building confidence in your kit and learning how to control the sensations so that you are always in charge.

“I was surprised at how nervous I was trying e-stim for the first time. I'd done my research, but it was a huge jump from reading about it to letting the electrons flow. I'm so glad that I tried it though.” – Jules

Next Steps: Exploring Genital E-Stim Safely?

Now that you know what to expect and are less nervous, the next time you play, you can work on the interesting parts of your body below the waist. Again, keep things simple using pads and imagine a line between the two pads when you place them. You want to aim to have that line go across your most interesting areas, such as along the penis or across the clitoris.

With genital stimming, it is even more important to go low and slow with the controls. Build up the sensations over time and enjoy sensations that can't be achieved any other way.

You are now firmly on the path to your first hands-free orgasm with patience and experimentation. It probably won't happen on the first go, as it takes experimentation, but when you get there - WOW! There is no feeling like it.

I hope this article has given you some ideas on how to try using some e-stim kit for the first time. Remember, get over your nerves, relax, and really take your enjoyment to new levels.

Aftercare & Looking After Your Kit

  • Gently peel the pads off your skin once the power is at zero and the box is off.
  • Check your skin – a bit of temporary redness is normal, but it should settle quickly.
  • Replace the plastic backings on your pads to keep them sticky longer.
  • Store your control box, cables and electrodes somewhere clean and dry.
  • Replace pads when they lose their stickiness or look tired.
“My eyes widened after the pads went on my forearm and I finally switched on the control box. Once I felt those first gentle sensations, I thought… whoa! I am really going to enjoy this.” – Sally

What Next?

I hope this article has given you some ideas – and some confidence – for trying e-stim for the first time. Remember:

  • Start somewhere non-threatening, like the forearm or shin.
  • Go low and slow with the power.
  • Take your time, breathe, and enjoy the ride.

Once you’ve got over the initial nerves, you can really start to explore and take your pleasure to new levels.
